Yanira Collado and Frances Trombly selected to Participate in Home + Away Program at Artpace San Antonio Oolite Arts

Three Miami-Based Artists to Participate in Home + Away Program at Artpace San Antonio as Part of Oolite Arts’ 2022 Travel Residency Program

MIAMI BEACH (March 25, 2022) — At the end of this month, three Miami-based visual artists will take over Artpace San Antonio for five weeks as part of Oolite Arts’ Home + Away travel residency program. Launched in 2019, this initiative provides career-advancing opportunities to artists in some of the country’s most prestigious artist residencies.

The artists’ work across various mediums including mixed-media, sculpture and textiles. They are:

Yanira Collado – A Dominican-born conceptual artist, Collado harnesses veiling techniques within abstraction to protect visual vestiges of modes of resistance and difference. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including Fragment at Emerson Dorsch Gallery in Miami, Fla.; Sacred Geometries at Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas; Monarchs at Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Fla.; Penumbras at Under the Bridge Art Space in Miami, Fla.; to name a few.

Troy Simmons – Born in Palestine, Texas, Simmons is a self-taught sculptor who works with a variety of materials including concrete, fabric construction debris and other items. In his work, Simmons celebrates Miami’s unique neighborhoods, many of which are being gentrified, by salvaging sections of buildings slated for demolition and transforming them into pieces of art, providing future inhabitants of the neighborhood with a glimpse into its past. The artist’s solo and group exhibitions have included VOLTA Art Fair in NYC and Basel, Switzerland; Artium Art in Miami, Fla.; JanKossen Contemporary in Chelsea, NY; to name a few.

Frances Trombly – Trombly sculpts with fabric, and she hand-weaves and hand-embroiders sculpture. The contemporary artist has exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo project at Locust Projects in Miami, Fla; and curated group shows Americana: Formalizing Craft at the Perez Art Museum Miami and united states at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Art Papers, Sculpture Magazine, Surface Design Journal, and The Los Angeles Times. Trombly’s work is in the permanent collection of the Perez Art Museum Miami and NSU Art Museum, For Lauderdale, among others.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate again with Artpace San Antonio which shares a similar vision and mission for supporting artists as Oolite Arts,” said Dennis Scholl, Oolite Arts’ president & CEO. “With the Home + Away program, our goal is to help artists grow professionally and personally by exposing them to new experiences in a different environment. San Antonio’s flourishing arts community will further lend creativity, as well as have something to be gained by these visiting Miami artists.”

This year’s cohort will enjoy a five-week residency at Artpace San Antonio, including a furnished apartment, a workshop equipped with supplies and computer facilities, administrative support and access to local artists, art leaders and curators. The residency runs through May 4 and will include a welcome dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 14 where the public will get a chance to meet the artists and learn about their art practice. Oolite Arts’ Home + Away program also provides travel residency opportunities for local artists at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Island, Fla. and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Col. Oolite Arts provides artists with stipends and covers tuition and travel expenses.

Since its inception in 1984, Oolite Arts, Miami’s leading visual artist support organizations, has offered residencies to artists at its current home on Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road. The Home + Away program builds on this mission with prestigious national residencies, providing artists with exposure to new people, ideas and connections that can propel their career.
